The Grossglockner 3798 m is the highest peak of Austria.
The classic route runs on the south side of the mountain, starting from the Lucknerhaus 1918 m, above the village of Kals.
During the season the Glossglockner is very busy and it’s possible to climb it in two days sleeping at the very comfortable Studlehutte hut 2802 m. When the hut is closed ther’s a little chalet where is possible to sleep paying a fee for the wooden fire (14 euros per person, 7 for alpine club members): it’s very well maintained, with electricity a toilette and 16 places.
From here the route climbs the glacier (Kodnitzkees) and the roky ridge (Adlersruhe) to the Erzhog Johann hut 3454 m, and then a 40° slope on snow/ice to the final rocky ridge (grade II, equipped with pitons).
